Reality TV meets animation in this Cartoon Network Survivor parody about 22 teenagers who are dumped together at a rundown summer camp in Ontario for eight full weeks (and 27 full episodes) of crazy physical challenges, psychological games, lousy food, and plenty of drama. Object of the game: avoid taking a walk on the dock of shame to the boat of losers and be the one remaining teen who will receive a 0,000 cash prize. Extreme personalities are the norm at Camp Wawanakwa and range from Goth to jock, empty-headed beauty, juvenile delinquent, inseparable best friends, nice guy, and nerd. Survivor fans will notice some overtly obvious parallels between Total Drama Island characters and past Survivor participants. Peaceful co-habitation would be a challenge in the best of circumstances, but when the contestants are pushed to their absolute limits in challenges like cliff-diving into shark infested waters, killer dodge ball, a Fear Factor type challenge, and trapping wild animals, tempers flare and drama reigns. Add in host Chris, who's got a serious issue with the enjoyment of torturing others, and crazy Chef Hatchet, who does so much more than just cook lousy meals, and be assured that absolutely anything could happen. Kids 7-10 years will be completely entertained by the show's focus on extreme challenges and the abundance of bodily function humor that includes everything from burping the alphabet to excessive flatulence, projectile vomiting, and diarrhea. Despite finding the show's events ridiculous and even stupid, older kids find themselves inexplicably hooked on the humor, comedy, and adventure while adults will marvel at how well the show's writers have captured the character extremes that are apt to emerge in current reality television programming. Total Drama Island features superficial characters, bodily humor, and adventure in the extreme and can be counted upon to simultaneously entertain and disgust. --Tami Horiuchi
