Saturday, President Barack Obama's administration announced the food pyramid will be replaced with a new icon designed to make the information more digestible. A writer for Medical News Today reports... "The food pyramid is giving way to a simple, plate-shaped icon, which is sliced into portions for basic food groups - fruits and vegetables take up half the space....the aim of the plate is to provide US citizens with an easy-to-use reminder of what a basic health diet should consist of." According to a writer from The New York Times, the food pyramid has taken a lot of flack over the years over its design. He says the pyramid... "...was deeply flawed because it did not distinguish clearly between healthy foods like whole grains and fish and less healthy choices like white bread and bacon... [the current version] has been so streamlined and stripped of information that many people have no idea what it represents. " So what's the big deal? Analysts on CNN say -- while most adults don't really use the symbol--they aren't the icon's prime target. "I think the hope is that if you can look at this plate and if you can see 'Oh I'm suppose to be eating more fruits and vegetables', if you're reminded of that, then there's hope that that will held especially with school children and that's where they really use the pyramid.
